This year, I am once again participating in the 52 Book Club Challenge. The Challenge is to read one book each week, to a particular prompt. The thing I most enjoy about this challenge, apart from reading the books, is matching books to the prompts. It’s a fun thing to do, and I often end up choosing a book that I may not have otherwise read. That is always a positive. Quite often the prompts have me scratching my head for a while. and that’s when the challenge kicks in. I do enjoy the hunt for a book to fit a particular prompt, and always look forward to seeing what books other readers chose for each prompt.

Below are the books that I have read for the challenge so far this year. I haven’t read as many as I would have like to by this time of the year. The main reason for this, is that books reserved at the library have been a bit slow to arrive. Shouldn’t be long now until I’m able to collect them.

This book with it’s beautiful writing about the natural world and the way the characters respected and cared for each other, was a pleasure to read. The characters were very strong and independant and when they were facing challenges, I was totally immersed and couldn’t put the book down. There was so much to love about the two main characters, and when they were facing difficult times, I couldn’t help but feel sad for them.

Before the Swallows Come Back is the story of people who live on the outside of normal society. Their lives mostly revolve around surviving in isolated places.Tommy and Charlotte, the main characters, formed a friendship when they met by the river. Tommy struggles to connect with people and would much prefer solitude with his animals and in nature. The life he lives, alone in his tent, is the life that he prefers.

Charlotte, and her father who is unwell, are very close, and like Tommy, Charlotte loves the outdoors and nature. When Charlotte and Tommy meet by the river, they develop a deep friendship, with their common interest in nature, which lasts and develops over the coming years.

I chose to read Before The Swallows Come Back after I read on Goodreads that this book is ‘the perfect read for lovers of Where The Crawdads Sing.’ I would agree most definitely.

So far this year I have read 84 books of my Goodreads goal of 140 books, so I’m happy to be slightly ahead of where I should be. Six of these books, I have given 5 stars.

So far 2024 has been a great year of reading, with having read 6 five star books.

What was your favourite book this month? I’d love to hear about it and will reply to all comments left.
