This historical novel is inspired by an actual event that shook a small Missouri town in 1928. Set in the author’s hometown, the story unfolds through two parallel timelines, separated by fifty years. It delves into the lasting consequences of a fateful decision made one night at the local dance hall – a decision that forever altered the lives of everyone involved.
At the heart of the tragedy are Violet and Rose Flowers, identical twin sisters whose teenage years are suddenly shattered. Decades later, their granddaughter, Daisy Flowers, begins digging into the town’s history. As she unravels the past, Daisy uncovers buried secrets that have haunted the community for generations, leading to revelations that will change everything she thought she knew about her family.
At first, I struggled to get into the story – the opening chapters took a bit of effort. But once my interest was sparked, I was completely captivated. The characters evolved and are truly fascinating, and I was left guessing at every turn, unsure of how the story it would unfold.
Without giving away any spoilers, the final chapter caught me completely off guard. The author’s words were nothing short of remarkable. This novel is absolutely worth reading, not just for the enjoyment it brings, but also for its unexpected twists.
This was a book club pick, and many of us shared the initial challenge of interest in the story. However, once the story hooked us, most of us were all in agreement – it was a read we ultimately appreciated.
