That Bligh Girlby

Sue Williams

Summary

That Bligh Girl is a historical novel that tells the story of real life person, Mary Bligh, the daughter of Governor of NSW, William Bligh. The story of her life is fiction based on fact.

Mary Bligh’s story starts in England, and follows her horrific six month sea voyage to Australia, where she is to assist her father in his duties as Govenor of the newly formed colony. After her arrival, she faces many challenges and obstacles. She is very a strong willed and determined young woman, who is not afraid to stand up for herself and her beliefs. Her over confidence and the way she dresses, causes the society women of the settlement to consider her to be scandalous. Mary does not define her life by her relationship with her father. In the colony, she has a reputation of being a trouble maker, as she tries to make her own way in the new country.

This well researched book provides a very clear picture of colonial Australia in the 19th century, with it’s descriptions of landscape, the people and the culture of the time. I was hooked by the story from beginning to end, due to it’s drama, history and romance. I’m sure that anyone interested in Australian history or historical history would love this book as much as I did.
